Entrepreneur Ollie Alexander, 36, loves watches, and has a collection of about 15 of them. He is particularly fond of Audemars Piguet, especially the brand’s Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph models, in the 42mm size—which the brand describes as a “more sporty, masculine and powerful take on the iconic Royal Oak” models. Yet he also has others, such as a Patek Philippe Aquanaut and Tag Heuer models. Meeting for an interview in the Writer’s Bar in Raffles Hotel Jakarta, Ollie spoke about his twin passions for horology and fashion.

Forbes Indonesia: Why is collecting watches important to you?

Ollie Alexander: I value every watch that I own. I see a watch as a lifestyle statement and also a statement to myself. Sometimes, I feel naked without them on my wrist. I got my first watch when I was 15 years old—it was a Rolex given by my father as a birthday gift. I still remember the day my father gave it to me. He told me that a watch is not something just to tell the time, but also teaches you how to value your time. He explained to me that time is a precious commodity, telling me this even when I was young. He taught me how to make the best use of my time.

FI: What features do you like in watches?

OA: I am always looking for watches that are both analog and automatic. I like my watch to have a classic design, yet also be up to date and have modern functions.

FI: What makes you buy a watch? Why this one and not the other one?

OA: In my opinion, a watch is a must-wear item for men. My watches are chosen to fit a variety of occasions—from formal to casual, so I have a watch to fit the different activities in my lifestyle. When I choose a watch, I always consider the brand, the functions, and whether it is a limited edition. For me, the price doesn’t matter. If I find a watch that fits my criteria, I will buy it, regardless of the price.

FI: What can you share some details about your collection?

OA: My collection is mostly high quality brands such as Audemars Piguet and Rolex, as well as some mid-tier, but still quality, brands such as Tag Heuer. I prefer to buy my watches during launching event for a new model or a limited edition showcase event, so I can buy the watch directly from the boutique. Then I can buy them when they are just launched and still new on the market. I consider it an honor to be among the first in Indonesia who are given the opportunity to buy and wear these special items first. You can’t put a price tag on that kind of prestige, although I have to say that these types of watches are always expensive to buy.
