The collection represented by powerful Mercedes-AMG drivers’s cars, a luxurious Mercedes-Maybach, and elegant coupes and cabriolets – all of which have one thing in common: pure desirability for the three-pointed star. ForbesLife Indonesia was among the privileged media to sample the cars, even though not all cars were able to be sampled we managed to experience two ultimate cars in the line-up. The Mercedes-AMG GT C and the MercedesAMG E 63 S 4MATIC+.
The test unit at the drive event was the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+ "Edition 1", it comes with a matte black paint that makes the car even more aggressive on top of all the sporty exterior features. The special edi tion marks the model on its first year of production and features two special paints of black and grey, there are also new AMG 20-inch forged wheels in matt black with high-gloss polished rim flange and the AMG Night package.
If one look closely the car is more aggressive than the ordinary E Class, it is more powerful-looking and 27 millimetres wider, the wheel arches accommodate the greater track width and the larger wheels on the front axle. For the first time on an AMG saloon, the bonnet is inset between the wings and bumper like on a coupé, thus exhibiting an entirely new, more dynamic approach to the sculpting. Inside the interior is as luxurious as a normal E Class but with some of the sporty enhancements, it has AMG Performance seats in black nappa leather with yellow topstitching. Also, colour-coordinated are the AMG Performance sports steering wheel, the upper part of the dashboard, the door panels, centre console, AMG floor mats and analogue clock featuring an IWC design.
To fully complement the sporty ambience, the interior is equipped with carbon-fibre trim elements. The main appeal of the car is that it is one of the perfect examples of a dual personality car, on the road when driven normally it is as comfortable and as quiet as a regular E Class. All the practical perks from the E Class is still here, it sits four peoples comfortably, has a big boot and an array of cupholders. The engine is the biggest feat of the car, start the car especially on a cold start and you can hear the powerful V8 brawls. It is assembled by one man following the standard of AMG for one man one engine principle, featuring many techs marvel by AMG that is currently the best F1 team in the world.
The two turbochargers are in the middle of the engine for a compact engine design, an immediate response from the twin-scroll turbochargers and low exhaust gas emissions. The incredible speed that the car can make equals to the sensation of speed from a supercar, exhilarating sound roared from the engine and your eyes will try to cope with the speed. The gearshifts are also fast thanks to the 9-speed dual clutch transmission that combined for the first time with a wet start-up clutch for more faster response times.
Another remarkable capability of the car is the all-wheel drive system, it can put down the power and gives excellent grip even though when tested the road condition was damp after the rain. Put the car to a halt, hold the brake and give full throttle to activate the launch control, lift the brake and the car will launch remarkably fast. The all-wheel drive also gives the car a respectable handling and grip in corners, the car able to give you confidence when driving fast.
Tested on a secluded area with some winding road of a resort in Kuantan, Malaysia and the car gave a stellar performance. The steering was spot on, it was easy to turn, and the stability was quite a feat, even though the car is almost 2 tonnes and far from a sportscar or super car.
