Slow business and furloughs have hindered the income of many, forcing people to pawn their items in order to keep some cash in hand amid COVID-19 pandemic. Such increase in transactions is seen by state pawnshop PT Pegadaian (Persero).
For Q1-2020 (January-March), Pegadaian recorded disbursing Rp 36.3 trillion on conventional and sharia pawn. The number is up by 18% compared to Q1-2019, according to company’s recent statement.
It stated that 95% of collaterals are of gold, and the rest are non-gold such as motor vehicle, household goods, and electronics.
As instructed by the President, Pegadaian has allowed credit relief to help its customers, such as by extending payment period, postponing installment payment, and exempting installment fines for non-pawn products.
Customers can also apply for their transaction online on Pegadaian mobile app to avoid visiting the outlet during the large scale social restriction (PSBB).
